Our dinner at La Roca Casa de Comidas was a highlight of our trip to Newfoundland. Pablo and Paula have done an incredibly job at creating a dining experience that showcases the best of what this region has to offer. Everything was cooked from scratch with love and this attention to detail came through with every dish. Dinner was served at a large shared dining room table and the intimate atmosphere this created made it easy to forget that we were eating out and not having a family dinner. We greatly enjoyed getting to know everyone else and exchanging stories about our time exploring Newfoundland. Although the menu is preset, the Inn goes above and beyond to cater to individual dietary restrictions and preferences, which we were asked about when we made our reservation. For us, the highlight of the dinner was a mackerel appetizer. Mackerel can be disappointing and overly fishy when not served extremely fresh. La Roca clearly sources its fish locally and we were impressed by how Chef Pablo cooked and presented this dish. In talking to Paula, it became clear that our hosts were very thoughtful in sourcing their ingredients. We wish more restaurants followed the example set by La Roca to focus less on variety and more on showcasing truly fresh and local food. We’ve traveled all over the world, and the dinner we had could hold its own against high end restaurants not just in Newfoundland but internationally.
